To Moderate or Not to Moderate?

Hi kids,
Not sure if you've noticed, but there have been a lot of spammy entries on the comm. They don't make much sense to me - they're basically copies of other, legitimate LJ users' entries with no links to anything I can see. IDK if this is part of the DDOS attacks LJ is periodically prone to and the perps are just getting creative, or if they're just really bad at phishing, but it's not something I want to expose you folks to in case it is something more sinister than I've seen.
My options here are limited: I can either moderate new entries (I think I can select those folks who regularly post stories and give them an automatic pass), moderate new membership, or do nothing. I would really hate to mod entries, because: annoying, and it would mean anyone who'd want to signal boost would have to join. If I mod new members, than basically I'd have to assume the person is a legit user if there's content on their journal (these spammers never have any entries), but then that limits membership for some peeps who really just join LJ so they can comment on others' LJs and/or receive the content they're interested in on their Friends page, and who even knows what it means for OpenID users.
What's a mod to do?
POLL THE COMM?
[Poll #1912679]
So if anyone has any other suggestions or has any other useful info for me, please head to the comments.
ETA: Thanks to the ones who voted, but I think I shall follow
embroiderama's sage advice below. There will be a post to that effect later in the week.
Also, it was pointed out to me that the reason for these spam attacks may be to capture the IP addresses of anyone who replies to them. Luckily, the gathering of IP addresses in the comments made in this community has been turned off since I took it over.
