White Collar Whump-a-Palooza II

Based on the results of our last poll , our next ‘fest will be Major Whump! Thanks to all who voted.

In contrast to the last Whump-a-Palooza , this one will be a good, old fashioned commentfic thang. And with the show now on hiatus, and some of the goodies they served up the last couple of episodes, the possibilities are endless. It’s time to deal some major whump to our favorite characters.

What do we mean by “major whump”?  Traditionally, I’d say it’s a major injury or illness, but it can be whatever you want it to be, really. We don’t stand much on ceremony here. I mean, if you can have Neal totally angsting over a toenail fungus, go to town.

Let’s just suppose that Checkmate didn’t go quite as we saw, El was never rescued, even though Peter tore down heaven and earth to find her, and Keller got away with the treasure.

Fast forward a few months and even though they haven’t spoken to each other, Neal is the one to bring El home to Peter. How’s Peter react? How does El? Do they find their way back together, all three of them?

There are so many Neal/Peter fics where they are being kept somewhere by the baddies and one of them is injured. Can we do the same with Neal and Clinton? Don’t care what the whump is, just that one of them is in a v. bad way, and the other has to keep him awake until help arrives.

When Neal was whaling away on Peter, he broke one of Peter's ribs. When the injury becomes apparent later on (in however mild or dramatic a fashion you prefer) Neal's anger has deflated and he feels guilty for actually hurting Peter.

And in a turn-about of my prompt above, what if Peter had actually broken Neal's jaw when he knocked him out? Plenty of pain for Neal and guilt for Peter, plus it would be difficult to talk out their situation with Neal's jaw wired shut.

Neal/anyone, or even Gen. Hate-crime

Hate-crimes happen. Especially in highly populated areas, so what if Neal were a victim of one? This is a pretty open prompt, since this type of whump is very open to interpretation, as many things constitute a hate crime. (Though since this IS a major whump ‘fest, a certain amount of violence is probably expected.*G*)
The pairing is open-ended too, since I like virtually all the usual WC pairings, though I’m especially fond of P/E/N OT3 and Neal/Jones. And could can be said for keeping this pairing lite, het, or gen, even, since a lot of hate crimes happen solely based on the thought that ‘that guy COULD BE gay/WHATEVER’.
I’ll throw a couple of maybe’s out here… Maybe Neal’s dodging a tail on a job and has to duck into a gay club or some other such venue and loses his tail, but get’s jumped on the way out.
Maybe a couple of FBI agents that already don’t like him based on the fact that he’s a criminal see him out on a date with an unknown man (could be Peter or Jones, if they were unable to get a good look), and they decide to go the ‘teach him a lesson route’… I know Peter said that the FBI doesn’t care about that sort of thing when Neal asked about Diana, but in my experience, that sort of policy is actually based more on what the boss’ opinion is, if you get what I’m trying to say, and only a moron is going to air their homophobic beliefs in front of either Peter or Diana.
Or maybe someone can come up with an even better scenario.*G* I’d just like to see something like this happen.

Post-series sick Neal

After finishing his sentence, Neal leaves New York. I'd rather it not be on *bad* terms, but maybe things were tense, Peter was disappointed, etc. (Or maybe it was due to P/N or OT3 relationship issues.) Some period of time later (a year or a few years) either Neal calls them or somebody else calls for Neal because he's seriously ill. They bring him home.

No death fic please, though close calls are fine.

Pretty much what the title says. An AU where Neal wasn't wearing the super vest when he got shot. Panic, bleeding, desperate last words, vows, confessions - anything goes :D

The Flynn(s) have kidnapped Neal in order to get a hold of the evidence box, though Neal does not know where it is. They send a picture each day to Peter of Neal's deteriorating state as proof of life.

James thinks that for Peter, Neal is just a valuable asset he wants to get back. Peter thinks James just wants to use Neal to get the box and protect himself. However, they have to work together in order to find the box without going to the Marshells and save Neal. Of course Mozzie doesn't trust either one of them.

Challenge to Neal's self image

WARNING FOR FACIAL SCARS, TRIGGERS FOR PAIN AND MEDICAL ICKINESS

There was a line in a fanfic from another fandom once where one character says to another who has suffered permanent facial scars, "I stared because your are so badly scared yet you are so handsome."

During a case Neal suffers third degree burns to his face. It takes hours before he gets medical help and by that time the prognosis is that he will be left with permenant scaring.

Neal has never been a shallow person yet he's worked his looks all his life. How will he deal with the change and how will his friends help him?

Gen please - A baddie comes after Neal and Peter by planting a bomb in Peter's Taurus. Peter and Neal are walking toward the car when Peter remote starts the car (Ford placement!) for whatever reason and the bomb goes off, throwing Peter and Neal away from the blast, but injuring them (severity up to the author). Bonus points if Neal has some PTSD-ish issues because of Kate's explosion death.

Neal's taken hostage in the course of a case, knocked around some, held at gunpoint, a lot of emphasis on the terror of the situation - but he's rescued, unharmed. Peter wants to know if he's okay, and Neal of course insists he's fine.

Then over the next couple of weeks, he starts to show signs of PTSD. Eventual hurt comfort, Peter/Neal or OT3 please :)

All of the recent issues with Neal's past bring some childhood memories to the surface, and he starts having nightmares, getting kind of jumpy and not nearly so sure of himself as he usually seems.

Eventually it comes out that as a child, Neal was severely abused by his emotionally and mentally unstable mother, and until now he's mostly repressed it - but now it's all coming back to the surface.

Lots of comfort with Peter assuring him it's not his fault, and that he's safe, etc...

I was totally thinking this...but it had to do with these sorts of memories coming to light when Neal's mom comes and she's not the most put together person that everyone thought she'd be. Because really, she wasnt with Ellen anymore. And it's my head canon that Ellen left Neal's mom after Neal left because of what she did to him....so much hurt...must resist...

Okay, stop laughing. There's a breadcrumb trail here. I was out at my friend's house meeting her new baby, and she put on the movie "Soul Surfer." (Not a bad flick, even if Carrie Underwood *is* in it.)And the scene where this poor girl's bleeding out on her surfboard and going into shock just kind of imbedded itself in my brain.

Fast forward to "Vested Interest," and the jibe about Neal faking his death a la Great White attack. Well, you can imagine what happened next.

So. Yeah. Now we're here. I'm thinking this is post-sentence, when Neal's a free man. Maybe he's in Hawaii with Sara, Peter, and El, and he's trying out surfing. Or he and Sara are skinny-dipping at dusk, because they've never seen "Jaws" and they're stupid. (Kidding.)

Anyway. There's my weirdass prompt. :D

Nighttime - a fire breaks out at Peter and Elizabeth's while they're sleeping, but Neal's coming by to talk to Peter about a case (or something). He rushes in, gets them out - smoke inhalation and/or burns abound.

Bonus: Peter and El move in to June's while the house is being fixed or they're looking for a new one.

Peter's voice and Neal's eyes - They have a good reason

WARNING, TRIGGER, THROAT INJURY and MUTISIM, EYE INJURY AND BLINDNESS

It's just after "the fight". The Flynns were watching the house and kidnapp Neal and Peter planning to hold them in order to get Sam/James/????. During the scuffle, Neal's larynx is damaged and Peter is blinded. They have to free themselves and they have to trust in each other to do it.

When the assistant chief arrests Neal, he decides to teach Peter a lesson and has Neal transferred from precinct to precinct making it as difficult as possible for Peter to find him. Neal doesn't know what's going on, and no one will answer his questions, on orders. Also, because of the frequent almost hourly transfers he's not given any food or water. He is accidently placed in the cell with the actual robbers who are not too happy with him and take their angst out on him. Already shaken up with the none-to-gentle treatment, the beating he takes frightens him more than it might have because he does not see any way out.

How will Peter help him to deal with the PTSD?

Okay, I just don't get how any half way intellegent police officer would refuse to release someone who has been identified by a known FBI agent as working undercover. I'd think that once the "perp" was brought in front of a judge or even the file hit the DA's office for prosecution, that police officer would be up on charges for stupidity at the very least.

So, assistant chief Myron Myrick losses his job, then finds out everything he can about Neal Caffrey and sets about making Neal's and Peter's lives as miserable as possilbe. Neither of them know whose behind what's happening and it takes Mozzie to stop it before both lose their lives.

parachute malfunction

When Neal basejumps in Countdown (it was Countdown, wasn't it? *frets* *is too lazy to look it up on imdb.com*), the parachute doesn't open completely for whatever reason, so instead of the ridiculously graceful landing we saw on the show, he slams face-first into the street.

Actual whumpage-level is up to the author, though I'm all for broken limbs, broken spine (paralyzed!Neal FTW) or major head injuries. *evil cackle*

No actual death fic, please. I'm perfectly happy with gen, P/N or P/E/N. No Sara, please.

Either Neal, Peter or El are battling cancer with all its ugliness. No actual death fic, please, though the closer the call, the better. ;)

potential TW: drug abuse

For whatever reason, Neal is forced to take drugs (I'm talking heroin, cocaine, crack, etc, not alcohol or weed). Maybe he's undercover and needs to take some to maintain his cover, maybe he's taken by some bad guys who shoot him up to make him more malleable (and/or make him addicted so he agrees to turn tricks for the next shot--he's pretty and would make any pimp a lot of money, after all, so yay for that particular trope!).

Whatever the reason, Neal's seriously addicted by the time he's rescued. Peter and El (Mozzie optional but always welcomed!) do their best to keep things under wraps and help Neal through detox. Violence, aggressive behavior, begging shamelessly, offering anything from his own body to his half of the Nazi treasure--Neal goes through it all.

Gen, P/N or P/E/N happily hugged!

“Neal,” Peter said, his voice strangled, muffled by the biohazard suit. This wasn’t happening – a rare and fatal toenail fungus?!

Neal opened his eyes and Peter could see them casting about, not able to focus. He leaned closer, cursing, the damned suit not making touching possible. “I’m here. Right here.” He placed a gloved hand to the side of the dear face, thumb caressing the sweaty brow.

“Peter?” Neal's voice was soft, barely a whisper. “Peter.” He seemed to relax as he pressed his face into Peter’s hand.

“Hey, I told you I’d always find you, didn’t I?”

Neal smiled and coughed weakly. “Peter Burke will always find me.”

“That’s right, always. We’re a team, you know?”

“Mm-hmm. Butch and Sundance,” he murmured, closing his eyes.

“God, Neal!” Peter could no longer keep the tears at bay. This was it – this was the end. “Neal, Neal, Neal.”

Neal's eyes opened wide, and for the first time in days, he was fully lucid. “Peter!” he said urgently, watery blue eyes boring into Peter’s. He reached out with his right hand and grasped the front of Peter’s biohazard suit with a strength that belied his condition.

“Neal?”

“Don’t… don’t mourn for me, OK? I don’t think I could bear it. Promise.”

“I – don’t know if I can do that, Neal.”

“Please.”

“Neal, please don’t ask me –“

“Promise,” Neal ordered. “You do something with your life – don’t waste it on that. Promise.”

“Neal, I –“

“Please.” His voice was so weak, his breathing ragged and harsh. Peter knew he didn’t have a lot of time left.

“I promise.” He bit his lip until it bled to contain the sob that threatened to tear from his throat.

Neal relaxed again, a smile on his face. His hand fell to his chest; he was too weak to maintain the grip on the biosuit. “I always loved you, you know?”

“I know. I always knew.”

“Goodbye, Peter. Don’t forget. Don’t forget your promise.”

God damn me, but THIS promise I will keep, Peter thought, though he could say nothing but Neal's name, over and over.

With a final, soft exhale, Neal stopped breathing, his blue eyes dimming as his soul passed on. Peter’s knees buckled as the realization of it hit him, and he sagged against the hospital bed. Despair threated to overwhelm him, drag him down in its cold embrace, but he refused to allow it. With supreme effort, he stood, pushed himself away from the bed and straightened his back. Reaching forward to close Neal's eyes as gently as the gloves would allow, he closed his eyes and swore an oath.

“Damn it, Neal, you will not have died in vain. Trichophyton rubrum, you can run, but you cannot hide! I WILL find a cure!”

In Episode 4x06, remember when Peter checks the room, gun in his hand, Neal behind him. Before Neal enters the room, he asks to Peter if it's safe.

Neal : Good ?
Peter : Yeah !

While working a case, in a similar situation, Peter says to Neal it's safe, except it's not (criminal hid in the room) and Neal is hurt.

Major Angst for Peter feeling guilty.
