Chronic Illness/Permanent Injury Fic-a-Thon

This is a topic that’s a little more serious…it is a little more grounded in reality than standard Hurt/Comfort, in that there are not easy fixes and miracle cures. It’s not what’s on TV, for the most part. And that’s what gives it its appeal, I think, and how fandom can do what it does best – reflect a reality with the characters that we don’t ever really see – in canon or on our TV screens.
 
Because in real life, when someone gets shot through the shoulder, there’s likely to be serious nerve and muscle damage they will have to deal with for the rest of their lives. And in real life, people aren’t magically cancer-free at the end of the story arc – those who have survived it must live with the after effects for a very long time.

Through some degenerative disease, Neal is going blind. And he’s apparently OK with it, which Peter knows is a complete crock of shit.

Neal has been shot and it’s left him unable to walk , either completely or without a cane or other aide. This makes him fear his usefulness to the FBI is at an end – how does he cope? Does he plot an escape? What’s Peter do when he figures it out?

Through whatever means the writer chooses, Neal suffers a permanent facial scar. I'd like to see an exploration of how invested Neal is in his true looks versus the front he puts up and how much his self image is reflective of other people's reactions to him.

Could be an AU story where Neal is epileptic but he doesn't have a seizure if he takes his medicament. Peter doesn't know. For some reason, he doesn't have his medicament and has a seizure. Peter discovers his illness.

Or, during a case, Neal has an head injury and suffers epileptic seizure after that.

I would really like to see this story - I've seen a couple of seizure stories, but very few and the epilepsy idea is one that I haven't heard yet. If a story does get written, will it show up on this board?

The initial injection to the heart was great for Peter, but what happened after the ambulance doors closed and he was taken to the hospital?

Myasthenia gravis or other thymus problems

Peter has symptoms of a thymus disorder. It turns out he has a tumor on the thymus, and/or myasthenia gravis (or cancer), and needs surgery.

Would like the focus to be on Neal realizing the risks of the surgery, the implications of a diagnosis of cancer (if the author goes that route), and facing the prospect of Peter out of his life.

I wrote a fill for this ... kinda; I ended up writing a pretty short story rather than a longer one, and, after researching symptoms for a while, didn't feel qualified to handle myasthenia gravis in that amount of space, so I simply went with unspecified cancer - I hope that's okay! I figured that I could get to the part that you wanted more easily that way, without getting bogged down in a sea of detailed explanations for Peter's symptoms.

I dithered over whether to post this one as it is rather similar to surreal_44's prompt, but it's a different enough angle I thought I should go ahead and post it - this is something I have been thinking about writing for a while, actually, but can't quite figure out how to pull it off, so I figured I'd throw it out there!

Months or years after "Company Man", Peter learns that there is damage to his heart from the poisoning (possibly via a small heart attack while in the field). He has to go on light/restricted duty and can no longer do field work.

Mozzie: mobility-restricting injury & subsequent adjustments

Mozzie suffers some kind of injury that results in mobility impairment - a leg injury that leaves him with a severe limp & walking with a cane, a spinal injury, damage to his heart from the bullet in season two, etc. So he has to adjust his lifestyle to compensate, and he & Neal have to work out the new boundaries of their relationship, with Mozzie less able to get around easily, but every bit as paranoid, secretive about his movements, and resistant to outside interference as he's ever been.

Elizabeth Has Cancer

Elizabeth is diagnosed with breast cancer. Obviously how would this affect her life and job while she goes through treatment.

How would Peter cope with the possibility of losing his wife?

I was thinking too how Mozzie ( and Neal too) would react. I'm think Mozzie would have all kinds of ideas on how to get treatment.

Peter is chasing Neal but is always more than a step behind. Then, suddenly, there is no trace of Neal to be found. No thefts that have his signature, no forgeries that could be his - nothing.

Fast forward some years. One evening Peter stumbles (literally or in any other way) over a man in a wheelchair. Turns out - it's Neal, who somehow got paralized (a rope broke and he fell and broke his back, got shot and his spine was hurt, whatever)...

I'd love it when Neal's support system (Mozzie) isn't available for any reason (maybe Mozzie died in the same con gone wrong which paralized Neal?) and if he has a hard time making a living but it isn't a "must".
